The trip report

Very enjoyable outing - thanks, Graz! Sunny day, scenic hike, friendly guys and 4 people interesting in BACKPACKING: Rob, Carl, Keith and Graz if I remember correctly. Two easy campsite possibilities: Muddy Pond in Westminster on the MA Midstate Trail (6.5 miles from parking location at Rt. 2) and Douglas State Forest (3.5 miles from parking location). Anybody who's interested or has questions, please contact me.

About this event

Come explore this trail with me! We'll take the Heronry, Ovenbird, and Chestnut Oak Loop trails. The hike is 3.5 miles and is relatively flat with an elevation gain of 285 feet. The trail's highlight is the "heronry" itself, which is a rocky outcrop where you can peek at a beaver pond. If we're lucky, there may be some great blue herons nesting early in the tall dead trees. This time of year, the weather can be volatile, so please be prepared to hike on snowy or muddy paths.

I made a Google Map overlay, which you can use with the following link:

https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1aYUfn8-EIm3QH0DfBb1u_IYamUNxXwM&usp=sharing

It shows the trails in different colors: Heronry in red (except for the beginning portion - which Audubon's map calls "Mourning Cloak" - in orange), Ovenbird in green, and Chestnut Oak Loop in blue.
Also shows a few other named trails in other colors. And unnamed paths are in black.
