The trip report

Written by Bobcat

We enjoyed a beautiful 9 mile hike to the summit of Mt. Hight.  Trail conditions featured packed snow but with many postholes along the route.  The summit had great views of the Northern Presidentials & the Carter Range   Conditions on the summit were sunny, breezy & very cold (there was a wind chill advisory that day) but we were able to spend 15 minutes on the summit to experience the view & arctic weather!  We were sheltered from the wind for most of the hike except for the summit.

About this event

Join us on this 8.8-mile out-and-back trail near Pinkham Notch, New Hampshire. Generally considered a challenging route with an elevation gain of 3200 feet, it takes an average of 6-7 hours to complete.

Mt. Hight's summit provides hikers with spectacular views in all directions, including a great look across the notch at the lofty Northern Presidentials, views north and south along the Carter-Moriah Range (which Mt. Hight is a part of), and an expansive vista over the Wild River Wilderness.

Microspikes and possibly snowshoes will be needed.  An update on trail conditions will be sent out a few days before the hike.

Hikers are invited to an après hike potluck/get-together after the hike at my house in Sugar Hill NH.

If you have questions about winter hiking or gear needed, please email me.  Hikers can stay at my house on Friday and/or Saturday nights if desired.

Just fyi I am looking at spending Saturday night, and possibly Sunday night leaving Monday morning.

What's the trail conditions? We going to need snow shoes?
Bobcat · Feb 15, 2024
Probably will not need snow shoes since the new snow (2-4 inches) will be stomped down by the Saturday hikers. Temps will be about 10F with a westerly breeze. We will be in the trees for mostly all of the hike except for a brief time at the summit of Mt. Hight. I will forward the Higher Summit Forecast when available on Friday eve.
