The trip report

Written by Gandalf

We seven intrepid adventurers met up at Waterville Valley Nordic Center for a day of cross-country skiing. It was a cloudy day with occasional snow flurries with temperatures in the mid-30’s. Conditions were solid with just a few spots of thin cover here and there. It was amazing how good the conditions were despite the recent rainy events!

We met at the Nordic Center to purchase tickets with Paul and Craig staying there for lesson. The rest of us drove to the North End to ski uphill up Livermore Road. Who could ask for more! The trails were wide, beautiful, and well groomed. Quite a few people on the trails enjoying this warm day. It was so warm; we ran into Nordic skiing legend Kris Freeman skiing shirtless!

It was a fast descent back down to the parking lot where we returned back to the Nordic Center to meetup with Paul and Craig for lunch indoors. Afterwards we drove to Snow’s Mountain parking lot and walked to the Connector Trail to continue our skiing adventure. The Connector Trail has a beautiful stretch of skiing along the Mad River with some trophy homes on the other side.

Paul and Craig decided to focus on this area to practice their skiing skills while the rest of us continued up skiing up Lower Osceola, Moose Run, Wicked Easy and Bob’s Lookout. We had enough for the day and headed back to our house for some après ski activities. We soaked our tired muscles in the hot tub, warmed up by the fireplace and enjoyed hardy vegetarian pesto lasagna with a side of seasoned meatballs, sausage and peppers prepared by Jon! We finished our meal with a delicious strawberry cheesecake. A fantastic time was had by all!

About this event

Join us for a day of cross-country skiing at the Waterville Valley Nordic Center. The trails are wide, beautiful and well groomed. One of the best in the New Hampshire! Waterville is nestled in a high valley within a ring of 4,000-footer mountains in the White Mountain National Forest!

We will do a variety of trails, some hilly and some flat. We ski a combination of easier and intermediate trails. We’ll start the day skiing in the South End with lunch inside the heated Adventure Center. After lunch, we'll drive to the North End exploring the Osceola Vista Campground trails. We’ll then assess from everyone if they feel like skiing more trails or call it a day.

If you need to rent XC Ski equipment please arrive a half hour early so by the time we arrive at the Nordic Center for 9:30 AM, you are ready to GO! If this is your first-time cross-country skiing, we highly recommend you sign up for a beginner class and we can make arrangements for you to meet us on the trail once you’ve finished. Reservations are required for Nordic lessons. To make a reservation, please call 1-2 weeks ahead of time.

Don't forget to wear warm layers [NO COTTON OR BLUE JEANS], gloves, handwarmers, warm hat, neck gaiter [if very cold], water, lunch, snacks, and anything else you would bring for a cross-country ski adventure. We ski with a small backpack to carry these items. We will be having lunch on the trail.

The trail fee is $27. Contact us if you have any questions.
