The trip report

Written by MO

It was a  bit chilly, but sunny, when five of us met Sunday morning for a 3 hour excursion around historic Laudholm Farm Reserve.  We traveled the outermost trails.

The reserve has a bit of everything - snow covered grasslands, aspen groves, orchards, woodlands, tidal pools, a salt water marsh, barrier dunes, a beach area and views of the Rachel Carson Wildlife Refuge, across the estuary.  The low angled sunlight made the place seem all that more special.

We had great conversations of flora and fauna, including wildlife, found on the reserve.   Afterwards we had a late lunch at the Maine Diner.  What a great day !!!

We are all looking forward to future GO adventures.

About this event

Laudholm saltwater farm is part of the Wells Reserve.  Hiking trails are easy and cover a variety of habitats - meadow, forest, swamp and beach.  There are approximately 7 miles of easy trails to experience the beauty of south coastal Maine. Trails are available year round for hiking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing.  There are long sections of wooden walkways crossing the wetland areas as well as access to a walkable beach.

Walking the 5 – 7 miles of trails should take under 3 hours.   Afterwards let’s do lunch at a local eartery of the group’s choosing.

Admission to Laudholm is free after mid-October

No pets allowed on the trails (sorry…)

Make sure to bring the following:

  • Hiking footwear (may need boots/stabilizers dependent on snow coverage)
  • Dress in layers
  • Plenty of water
  • A snack (lunch will probably be between 1 and 2pm  - if you decide to join us)

As mentioned above - after the hike join us for lunch at a local eatery of the group's choosing.

Sorry I'm pulling out at the last minute. One of our group has come down ill and can't make the hike, and I was along for the ride. Have a great hike. Stay bundled up and warm!
