About this event
With 210 acres, Peddocks Island is one of the largest, most scenic and diverse islands in Boston Harbor. Composed of five drumlins connected by tombolos (gravel/sand spits), the island is crossed by scenic hiking trails and has unique geological features, sweeping sand and gravel beaches, woodlands, historic structures and spectacular views of the harbor and Boston. We'll take the ferry from Long Wharf North to Georges Island, then hop on the water taxi for the quick trip to Peddocks. Starting our hike at East Head, we'll explore the eerie ruins of Fort Andrews, continue on to Middle Head with its remnant of an old summer community and fishing village, investigate stunning Prince Head and walk the shoreline around West Head over to picturesque Portuguese and Peggy's Coves, where we'll have the opportunity to have an invigorating swim in the harbor waters. After the hike around East Head we'll once again return to the fort and dock. The hike has a length of about 5.0 miles. We'll return on the 5 pm direct ferry, arriving 5:45 pm in Boston, where we can possibly reconnoiter and discuss our island adventure over dinner at an local eatery.
As there are no facilities on the island (okay - there is a restroom near the dock), please be sure to bring plenty of water, food for lunch/snacks, sunblock, insect repellent, a towel and bathing suit for the possible swim, and any personal items you may require.
Rain will cancel.
