About this event
This will be an exciting long weekend on the spectacular and untrammeled Downeast Coast of Maine. Our two full days, Sat. (8/29) and Sun. (8/30), will focus on a few of the most scenic hikes on this part of the coast. On Sat. (8/29), we'll drive to the Schoodic Peninsula of Acadia National Park. More secluded than the park's Mount Desert Island portion, Schoodic is just as spectacular. That day, we'll take the 2.5 mile RT hike up to the top of Schoodic Head via the Anvil Trail. At only 440 ft. elevation, the Head is pretty much right on the ocean and will give us breathtaking views of the area including the always-awesome Mount Desert Island skyline and Frenchman Bay. In the afternoon, if the tide is right, we will take the 1.5 mile RT hike over to Little Moose Island, also in the park. On Sun. (8/30), we'll drive up the coast to take two short hikes on the undiscovered, scenic Bold Coast. In the morning we'll explore the Bog Brook Cove Preserve on a 2.5 mile ridge hike overlooking the cliffs of the rockbound coast. After lunch, we'll take a 2 mile loop hike in Quoddy Head State Park, famed for its lighthouse and pristine spruce forest on its jagged, rocky coastline overlooking Grand Manan Island. And if we're just a bit lucky, we'll spot a few whales, seals and bald eagles! This promises to be a memorable long weekend. I can recommend reasonably-priced accomodations for your stay in Machiasport/Machias for the three nights (8/28-8/30). The first night, we'll all meet at my house in Machiasport (see directions) and have a dinner together. Please be in touch with me about any an all details.
