Star Gazing at Cherry Springs State Park
Galaxies and Shooting Stars
The trip report
This trip was "way out there" in more ways than one. The trip was 200 miles or more for some participants but when we got there we were rewarded with a view of the skies you just can't see anywhere near urban areas. If you go, choose a moonless night and one with a guided presentation. The park staff is very helpful and often do shows pointing out constellations and blowing up galaxies on computer screens connected to telescopes. Very cool. I saw four minor shooting stars and one very bright one which was an unexpected bonus.

About this event
Cherry Springs State Park exists largely to provide an exceptional viewing site for star gazing. An almost total abscence of light allows the eye to see the night sky as you've probably never seen it before. Sept 20th is an exceptional night as the moon sets before sunset and is absent from the night sky. There is also a presentation about the night sky this evening at the park. See details at: http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/findapark/cherrysprings/index.htm We will all meet at the program for that night - The Andromeda Drama at 9PM. Note: it is cold up there so bring warm clothes, blankets and a lounge chair if you don't want to lay on the ground. You may need a place to stay the night so try sites like Yelp for assistance. http://www.tripadvisor.com/LocalMaps-g52427-d624813-Cherry_Springs_State_Park-Area.html Henry, Ben and I will be staying the night at the Millstream Inn 918E 2nd St. Cloudersport PA 16915 phone. 814-274-9900. You're welcome to join us and you might want to ask other participants if they want to share a room. Because this activity depends on a clear sky, I've planned a separate activity in the area earlier in the day which is not weather sensitive. Sign up for the Penn's Cave activity if you can make it.
