The trip report
There were no complaints regarding the weather. It was simply perfect for a moderate hike on the first official day of summer. The group gathered as planned at Miller State located off RT 101 in Peterborough. We were a small group of seven with two people who had signed up for the event pulling a no show.
As planned, we began the ascent via the Wapack trail which is a bit challenging when first starting out but certainly manageable. Upon reaching the summit we took a break and had lunch at one of the picnic tables set up near the base of the fire tower. Climbing the top of the fire tower provided a breath taking panoramic view of the many surrounding mountain peaks which included clear visibility of the Boston city skyscrapers 55 miles away.
After our lunch break we descended via the Marion Davis trail. Upon rarriving back to the parking lot some of us decided to drive to nearby Connolly's dairy farm in Temple to enjoy some fresh homemade ice cream where we met an intriguing gasoline can sniffing young heifer we affectionately named Clarabell.
In summary, the weather was absolutely awesome with plenty of sunshine and no humidity coupled with the welcome absence of any pesky flying insects. It was a fun filled afternoon excusion where new friendships were made. You simply cannot ask for anything better. Thanks to all who made this trip a success.
Cheers,

About this event
Please join me at Miller State Park for a moderate pace early summer season 2.8 mile loop hike that follows the Wapack Trail to the 2,290 ft summit with decent via the Marion Davis Trail. The trek offers good views of the Contoocook River Valley. The Wapack trail has a few ledgy uphill sections that are moderately challenging but not overly strenuous. Arrival at the summit affords numerous mountain views that include but not limited to Temple Mountain to the south, the Wapack Range to the southwest as well as Mount Monadnock located 12 miles away. At the summit there is a 27 ft fire tower with accessible staircase. On a clear day Boston is visible from 55 miles away to the southeast.
Bring plenty of H20 as wellas insect repellant and sunscreen. We will plan to have lunch at the summit.
Leashed dogs are permitted on the trails.
