The trip report

Incredibly clear weather was enjoyed by 3 members attending the Glacier National Park outing. On Monday we took the MV Sinopah across Two Medicine Lake to the trailhead to Dawson Pass. A 4 mile hike with 2,400' elevation gain led to the pass. Moderately strong winds were encountered at the pass, but the views down into the Nyack Valley and of the Pumpelly Glacier were superb. A thunderstorm was encountered just as the group boarded the MV Sinopah to head back to the campground. The storm ended as the dock was reached. After a day's rest, showers, a tour of the 100 year old "Glacier Park Lodge" and some shopping in East Glacier, the group was ready to climb the Mt. Henry Trail to a secluded point about 2,500' above the valley. The views were very impressive with the panorama of the prairie meeting the mountains to the east and the Continental Divide to the west. A leisurely lunch was enjoyed after a short rest in the warm sunshine. The campground was very quiet and orderly with CG hosts and NPS Rangers. This is an area that bears a repeat, perhaps at the Many Glacier area next year. Thanks to all for a great week!

About this event

Two Medicine Campground is in the south east corner of GNP about 13 miles from the town of East Glacier.  We'll be using the public campground as a base camp to access trails in the area without having to drive to a trailhead.  The difficulty varies by trail, so there are opportunities for easy walks as well as more strenuous.  This is not secluded, one must expect to encounter a few other visitors on the trail.  This actually ensures safety and allows splitting of the group if separate difficulty levels are desired.   Cellphone communication is difficult.   We use GMRS / FRS radios as well as the local amateur repeaters for safety.  If you have a walkie-talkie, please bring it.

I believe that the campground allows 2 vehicles per site, 2 tents per site, 6 occupants per site.  It should not be a problem obtaining sites at Two Medicine CG & I may secure sites for latecomers, first night the site must be occupied, however.  Meeting time is suggested for securing a site, Sunday will be a gather and meeting / prep day.  Flush toilet, garbage service, interperative evening programs are provided. $20 per site per night last year.
Please, no pets!

Other hiking option might be a drive to Logan Pass and exploration of the "Reynolds Route" or the "Oberlin Route", both spectacular along the Continental Divide and easier since the trail head is already at 6,644 ft, above the tree line.  Inclement weather or rest day activities may include The Museum of the Plains Indians in Browning, visit to Glacier Park Lodge, an enormous hotel in East Glacier, rafting the Middle Fork near West Glacier, etc.  Host has enough knowlege of the area to entertain the curious.
Can't stay long? Stop in for a day or so.

Campers will be expected to provide their own food, tents, etc.  IMPORTANT! ALL FOOD RELATED ITEMS WILL BE UNDER PERSONAL SUPERVISION OR STORED IN BEARPROOF LOCKERS OR VEHICLES.  This will make the help upset, do not violate!  I have seen folks kicked out of the CG over this issue.

I forgot to mention that Glacier National Park strongly discourages the importation of firewood in an effort to control insects, etc. One may be questioned & wood will be confiscated at the entrance gate. Please DO NOT BRING FIREWOOD, it's light 'til past bedtime & we won't be needing a fire for heat or cooking. I have the Coleman 2 burner & white gas if needed.
One may purchase bundles of approved firewood at the campstore if desired.
