The trip report

TRIP REPORT – ROCK RIVER HIKE AND SWIM – Saturday, July 21, 2012
The weather was beautiful; a cool (relative to past week) 76 degrees, a clear blue sky – the sun having burned off early morning clouds and mist, and a nice steady cool breeze as nine of us crossed from the parking area on VT Route 30 to the Rock River trail around 11am.

The trail, approximately .8 miles runs along the Rock River, a crystal clear mountain stream alternately ambling over a rocky bed and rushing through narrow channels of solid ledge. Mature pine, birch and maple shade the trail for most of its length, their roots holding tenuously the dirt trail along the base of the steep 100 foot bank.

Though idyllic and peaceful, we noted abundant evidence of last summer’s violent Hurricane Irene: steeply eroded banks 20 to 30 feet beyond the original river bed leaving tall piles of 40-foot tall trees ripped out by their roots and a new layer of sand deposited along and in the once rocky banks and deep swimming holes.

One of the most popular jumping spots – a 20-foot rock cliff called “Indian Love Call” - now has an ominous, hand painted sign saying “don’t jump”. Snags of branches, roots, and sheet metal 15 feet above in the still standing tree branches indicate the level of the river at it’s destructive height and several stretches of the trail, now completely washed out, have become challenging climbs over sharp rock ledge.

The trip to the clothing-optional, traditionally all-male swimming area took about 35 minutes, and the early afternoon was spent talking, exploring the shore and swimming holes, photographing, and relaxing in the sun. Paul, a Gay Outdoors veteran mentioned that it was nice to be on an outing where there was a chance to get to know some guys and not just “hike our balls off!” Two additional Go hikers who had arrived late and found their own way in, joined us for the trip back and short drive up to Frog Meadow for their annual BBQ Fundraiser for the AIDS Project of Southern Vermont (see separate trip recap).

In all, a great day and a fun time for all!

About this event

Join us for a hike to one of Southern Vermont’s gay swimming gems, the Rock River. Rock River is Vermont's most popular place for nude swimming and sunbathing. It's known to have a good social atmosphere and everyone seems to look after each other. Popular activities are swimming, sunning and taking the rocks and building beautiful cairn structures.
Although Hurricane Irene has made a mess of many parts of the trail in, alternative trails have been cut and are well marked with fluorescent green blazes. Trip participants should be in reasonably decent shape and wear sturdy river shoes or hiking boots (pack sandals or flip-flops for the swimming area). Please pack sunscreen, towel, lunch and something to drink. We will depart at 11 for the 35 minute hike in and spend the afternoon enjoying the scenic beauty of the area and plan to hike out in the afternoon at approximately 3PM.
Following the day at Rock River, you are invited to Frog Meadow Farm for their 5th Annual BBQ & Lawn Party to benefit AIDS Project of Southern VT’s Men’s Program, THE men’s event of the summer season!
Gay Outdoors is proud to be the Lead Community Sponsor of this year’s BBQ/Benefit and has generously donated 4 Gold GO Memberships as raffle prizes. We hope to see you there! This is a great opportunity to connect with other GO members, spread the word about GO while supporting a worthy community cause!
Come and enjoy the lovely and secluded natural environment of Frog Meadow Farm’s 63 private acres, including the beautiful gardens, hiking trails and swimming pond (pack a towel!). This is a mostly clothed event. Nudity will be allowed for skinny dipping and sunning by the pond but otherwise this is a clothed event. There will be croquet, bocci, and other lawn games to enjoy! In addition, raffle tickets will be available the day of the event for all kinds of goodies!
Your suggested $35 donation includes a valuable door prize drawing and provides you with access to the grounds and a full barbecue meal (vegetarian option available). If you can contribute more than $35, or are unable to attend but would like to donate, you are encouraged to do so!

100% of the proceeds will benefit the AIDS Project of Southern Vermont's Men's Program! The Men's Program and The Aids Project of Southern Vermont provide prevention services as well as direct services to those whose lives are affected by HIV/AIDS. By providing education about HIV/AIDS the goal is to prevent its spread and promote understanding within the communities served. The Men's program has been an extremely important part of our local community’s landscape for many years. Due to policy changes at the federal level the Men's Program's funding has been eliminated. We hope to salavage what we can of the program through this and other grass root efforts. Please help us help the AIDS Project of Southern Vermont and the Men's Program with their very important work.BYOB!! As Frog Meadow Farm does not have a liquor license, no alcohol will be provided. However, you are welcome to bring your own beverage of choice!
Note that the rain date for the event is Sunday July 22

Hi Guys-

Looking forward to another great BBQ, the weather will be in the mid 80's and should be PERFECT!
I'm not sure that all of you have RSVP'd or bought tickets online (I know Bruce, Mac, Steve, Xavier and Dennis have) so if you’ve not already, please go to http://store.frogmeadow.com/ and pre-buy your ticket (preferred) or send me an RSVP email [scott @ frogmeadow.com] and we’ll have your names at the registration desk & have an accurate headcount for food.
Thanks & see you Saturday!
