About this event
Please join me for a self-guided, group tour of Cedar HIll Cemetary in Hartford, CT. Cedar Hill is one of America's oldest garden (or rural) cemetaries. The rural cemetary movement in began in the mid 1800's, and was marked by a paradigm shift in the American concept of cemetaries. Rural cemetaries were designed to 'be vast temples to the transcendent being where the visitor senses the eminenece of God in nature'. Cemetaries such as Cedar Hill are notable for their botanical garden-like settings, elaborate architecture, and sculpture-like gravestones.
This will be a 2-3 hour walking tour where we have the opportunity to view and enjoy many specimen plants and visit the final resting site of notable Americans such as Katherine Hepburn, JP Morgan, and Samuel Colt. The grounds are handicap accessible and walkways are paved, so those using wheelchairs, scooters, etc., should not hesitate to participate.
We'll meet at 9:00AM in the parking lot inside the main cemetary gate located at 453 Fairfield Avenue, Hartford, CT. The tour will last 2-3 hours, but partipants may leave earlier if necessary. After the tour, participants are welcome to join me for lunch at a local restaurant to be determined at the close of the event. Please feel free to visit cedarhillcemetary.org for more details on this loction or to print out a guide.
