About this event
Howdy Folks!
I’ve finally figured out when to re-attempt the LaJolla Valley Loop Hike that was cancelled due to thunderstorms last month … Sunday, December 26th. The day after you-know-what! Not only can you burn off some of your holiday cheer, but this will be the perfect day to don some of your new wool argyle socks and sweaters you got from your grandma!
For those of you who don’t know, I’m leading this as a joint outing with the WTC section of the Sierra Club. Everyone is welcome to attend, you don’t have to be a Sierra Club member to join me, but you will have to abide by some of their hiking rules … like, signing in with a waiver at the beginning, staying with the group till the end (between the leader and the sweep at all times) … nothing crazy, just want to keep everybody safe! Please rsvp!
Here's the description:
LaJolla Valley Loop, Mugu Peak (1266'): Come hike 10.8 miles on trail with 1950' of elevation gain and bag Mugu Peak.
Besides its spectacular ocean views and amazing topography (canyon, peak, prairie, dry pond, dry creek/falls, The Great Sand Dune) we'll also pass through a walnut tree grove and quite a nice exhibition of rare native vegetation (if you've never seen a giant coreopsis, you'll think you've entered Whooville!). Don't let the hour-long drive from Hollywood to the park discourage you .. the drive along the coast in the morning is breathtaking. Check the weather the night before and dress appropriately. While it may be in the 60's at sea-level on the coast, it's bound to be chilly and windy at the peak. Can't stress how important it is to dress in layers! (a monsoon will cancel, light rain does not .. bring a poncho.) This is a moderate/strenuous hike which will take 5-6 hours so, have a decent breakfast, bring some healthy snacks, 3 liters of water, bring a lunch, a jacket ... and a camera 'cause it's pretty cool. Meet 9:30am.
