About this event

UPDATE 1 8/18/2009:  If you bring your own Kayak or shell, they charge a $3 launch fee.

UPDATE 2 8/18/2009:  Parking, you can park near the boat house, but NOT ADVISED.  The close by parking lot is metered and monitored heavily by the DC Parking Police.  I was informed, they will ticket with or without time on the meter.   It is better to either park in the highlighted paid parking lots or if you know DC to park on the street and walk over.

UPDATE 3 8/18/2009:  Some have said 8:30 is too early, please consider 8:30 the setup time and not the launch time.  We will probably leave around 9AM.

Have you ever watched the kayakers from the bridge while running or biking? Well lets get on the water and look back at those looking at us.

Here is the map of where we will be going on the river.  This is mostly Cat I/II water, but depending if you have done paddling/rowing before, this could be a bit more strenuous.  Bring a swimsuit, shoes for the water (flip/flops, running shoes are not typically recommended), snacks, water, and change of clothes for afterwards for those that want to grab lunch afterwards.

The Thompson Boat Center, conveniently located at the intersection of Rock Creek Parkway and Virginia Avenue on the Potomac River in Washington DC's Georgetown, offers something for you no matter what yor interests. If you enjoy relaxing on the water, you the chance to see DC's monuments from a unique perspective, and to explore the hundreds of square miles of National parkland surrounding the Potomac river.

We will meet at the Thompson Boat Center, parking can be tiny bit challenging, so please note where to park.  If you Metro, Foggy Bottom Metro stop is near.  Parking lots are short walks to the boat house. Directions to Thompson's are here:

There is a cost to rent the Kayaks, paid to the rental company.  I would recommend the $24/day price vs the hourly.

Costs for Kayaks: -Singles (sit-ins) rent for $8/hr or $24/day.Doubles (Mainstream) rent for $10/hr or $30/day.
